The Saleen S7R represents a distinct moment in American endurance racing—a purpose-built machine designed to compete on the world stage. Developed from the road-going S7, the S7R transformed Steve Saleen’s vision into a focused, mid-engined race car built to challenge established European competition.
Just 18 examples of the S7R were ever produced. Fourteen were constructed by Ray Mallock Ltd. in England, while the final four were completed at Saleen’s facility in Irvine, California. Among them sits chassis 66R, one of the rare U.S.-built cars—placing it in an already narrow group within an already limited production run.
At its core, the S7R was built around a 7.0-liter Ford-derived V8, producing 600 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. Weighing just 2,425 pounds, the car balanced raw output with lightweight construction, forming a package capable of competing across long-distance endurance events.
Campaigning the car in 2006, the French team ORECA brought the S7R into the Le Mans Series, where it secured a significant victory at Spa-Francorchamps. The following year, the car continued to build its record in the FFSA French GT Championship, delivering three wins, seven podium finishes, and twelve top-five results across the season. Its reach extended to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it completed the race with a fifth-place finish in class—adding another layer to its international competition history.
Behind the wheel, drivers Stéphane Ortelli, Soheil Ayari, and Nicolas Lapierre pushed the car through some of the most demanding circuits in endurance racing. Their combined efforts helped define the competitive life of chassis 66R, establishing it as more than just a participant—it was a consistent contender.
The car’s story continues today, now under the care of 3 Dog Garage in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. Surrounded by a collection of historic race and road cars, chassis 66R remains part of an active preservation effort rather than a static display. The collection regularly participates in events such as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the HSR Daytona Classic 24 Hour, and other historic racing series, ensuring that cars like the S7R remain seen, heard, and understood in motion.
Across its career, chassis 66R recorded five pole positions—further reinforcing its pace alongside its race results. It stands as a reminder of what the S7R was built to do: compete, endure, and deliver performance when it mattered.
